Accommodation near the Royal Gwent and the Grange, Newport
A placement at the Grange or the Royal Gwent starts with the same message from the trust: your start date, your induction, and find somewhere to stay. Newport isn't short of hotel rooms. It's short of places you can live in for six weeks with the car outside, a washing machine inside and a bedroom you can sleep in at noon after nights.
That's the whole difference between a room and a house on a shift pattern, and it's why the houses below are booked by the week and the month rather than the night.
Two hospitals, two sides of the city
The Royal Gwent is on Cardiff Road on the west side of the river, beside Belle Vue Park and close to the centre. The Grange University Hospital is out at Llanfrechfa, past Caerleon on the north side of the city, and nothing is walkable to it from anywhere.
So the first question when you enquire is which hospital, because it decides which house we suggest. Every house here is a drive to the Grange. Two of them are close enough to the Gwent that the listing says so.
Near the Royal Gwent
Keynsham Avenue. A two bed house that sleeps four in one double and two singles, with parking. It's the house we'd put a single nurse or a couple in for a Gwent placement, and Friars Walk and the riverside are close for the days off.
Cape Lookout Walk. A four bed house with eight beds and two and a half bathrooms, near Belle Vue Park and the Royal Gwent, with free on street parking. It takes a team of locums or agency staff who want a bed each and one front door.
Ruperra Street. A five bedroom in Pillgwenlly, on the Gwent's side of the river, with zip and link beds that make up as kings or singles, so a cohort of ten sleeps one to a bed. Free street parking.
Towards the Grange
Caerleon Road. A four bed house with eight beds and two bathrooms, so it sleeps a team with a bed each or a family with room to spare. Caerleon Road runs out of the city towards Caerleon, which is the Grange's side of Newport, so the shift drive heads away from the centre rather than through it. Street parking outside.
Llewellyn Street. A four bed house on the east side of the centre with four double bedrooms, a sofa bed in the living room and free on street parking. It suits two or three staff sharing a placement, or a family moving for a post, and it's a drive to either hospital.
Walsall Street. A four bedroom that sleeps eleven, mostly in single beds, with free street parking. It's for a cohort placed together rather than a family.
What a placement stay gets
A bed each, and the listing says exactly which beds. A full kitchen, a washing machine, fast wifi and parking, stated per house. Self check in, so a 7am start or a 9pm finish doesn't meet a locked reception desk. A clean and fresh linen part way through any stay over a month, and one contact for anything that breaks, whichever shift you're on.
Which means the placement runs the way the job needs it to. You cook when you're hungry, wash a uniform at midnight, sleep after nights, and the car is outside when the alarm goes.
Rates, and how a trust books
Nightly rates are for weekends. A placement is quoted by the week or the month, and the monthly rate is the lowest we offer. Trusts and agencies can book with a purchase order; say so when you enquire and the invoice is set up that way from the start. A placement extends on a rolling basis where the calendar allows, which on a long rotation is most of the time.
Booking
Send the dates, how many of you and which hospital. We come back the same working day with the houses that fit and one rate for the whole stay. You get one confirmation with the address, the parking and the check in details, and nobody has to be awake to let you in.
What we can't do: we don't quote drive times, because a drive to the Grange at 7am and one at 7pm aren't the same drive. Every listing says where the house is, and you can check the route against your own rota before you book.
