The M48 Severn Bridge and Chepstow

The M48 Severn Bridge runs from junction 2 at Chepstow to junction 1 at Aust. Lorries over 7.5 tonnes have been off it since 27 May 2025. National Highways plans to let them back in January 2027 using signals on the slip roads, with traffic management while the system goes in. If the 2026 surfacing trial succeeds, both carriageways get resurfaced in 2027 to 2028.

The Old Wye Bridge to Tutshill has been closed to vehicles since October 2025, with no repair programme published. Chepstow Community Hospital is about 1 mile by road from our apartments, the DEEP campus at Tidenham about 2, and Beachley Barracks, where the Army's move out has slipped to 2031, about 3.

Caldicot, Magor, Glascoed and Newport

• Caldicot town centre is about 6 miles by road, Severn Tunnel Junction about 7 and Magor about 11. The AB InBev brewery at Magor has some 500 people and approval for three new tanks at its waste water plant.

• BAE Systems Glascoed, near Usk, is about 18 miles by road. BAE has applied for 18 new buildings there, with no decision reported.

• Newport city centre and the Royal Gwent Hospital are each about 19 miles by road, the Grange University Hospital about 22 and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny about 24.

Over the bridge: Oldbury, Filton and Avonmouth

• The Oldbury nuclear site is about 13 miles by road and the Berkeley site about 19, both in decommissioning. At Oldbury, teams are retrieving fuel element debris from the underground vaults. In May 2026 the site's owner chose Jacobs to gather environmental baseline data for possible new nuclear. No reactor project is confirmed.

• The former Filton airfield is about 12 miles by road, Southmead Hospital about 14, MOD Abbey Wood, the headquarters of Defence Equipment and Support, about 15 and Avonmouth Docks about 18.

• At the Almondsbury Interchange, £4.5 million of repairs run from 15 September 2026 to February 2027, with the M4 junction 20 eastbound to M5 junction 16 southbound link closed from December 2026.

Each one-bedroom is listed with one bed and the two-bedroom with two, so the three give four people a bed each. Crews go to Newport, where a five-bedroom home sleeps 12 and CapeHaus has 4 bedrooms, sleeps 13 and lists street and free parking.

Self catering in Chepstow: what a contractor stay includes

The standard in our contractor houses is a bed each, parking where the property has it, fast wifi, a full kitchen and a washing machine, with self check in for early starts and late finishes. In Chepstow, all three apartments are listed with internet, a workspace and a TV, and two of the three with a kitchen and a dishwasher. The third apartment's kitchen and the laundry in each apartment are confirmed at enquiry.

Van parking in Chepstow, the M48 and the stations

The council's long stay car parks in Chepstow are Welsh Street, with 207 spaces, and Castle Dell, with 93. Neither takes a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes. A resident's permit isn't a route for a work stay: it's one per household and needs proof of residency.

• There's no clean air zone anywhere in Wales. The nearest is central Bristol's, where a non-compliant van under 3.5 tonnes pays £9 a day.

• The M48 is reached from M4 junction 21 on the English side and junction 23 on the Welsh side.

• Chepstow station is under a mile by road from the apartments, with direct trains to Newport, Cardiff Central and Gloucester. Severn Tunnel Junction has direct trains to Bristol Temple Meads.

Can a full crew stay in Chepstow?

Not in one house. The three apartments give four people a bed each, so a full crew goes to our Newport contractor houses.

Can a van park at the Chepstow apartments?

They're listed with free parking, but a van isn't promised until we've checked at enquiry. The council's parking FAQ lists no height limit for its Chepstow car parks.

Can a van use the M48 Severn Bridge from Chepstow?

Yes. The 7.5 tonne limit applies to heavy goods vehicles, and neither Severn crossing has a toll. The bridge shuts to all traffic when gusts above 46 mph are expected, and everything diverts to the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.

Is there a visitor levy on a work stay in Chepstow?

No. Monmouthshire hasn't adopted the Welsh visitor levy. On the Welsh Revenue Authority's list, only Cardiff will charge it, from 1 April 2027.
